Center for New Institutional Social Sciences

Undergraduate Minor Program
The undergraduate minor program for CNISS consists chiefly of three parts: an introductory freshman seminar, a formal cluster of New Institutional Social Sciences (NISS) courses, and course opportunities across the disciplines for students interested in NISS. In addition, undergraduate students can apply for faculty-led research projects in NISS and participate in an undergraduate honors conference.

Certificate Program for Ph.D. Students
The Certificate Program in New Institutional Social Sciences for Ph.D. Students admits five students every year, one from each of the Ph.D. programs in social sciences at Washington University: Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, and Political Science. Students who have successfully completed their second year of Ph.D. training in their respective departments are encouraged to apply. Students are given summer funding in addition to the money they get from their stipends in the respective Ph.D. programs in which they are enrolled.

Summer School
This program is open to both graduate students and nonstudent participants.

First, two basic training courses are offered at Washington University every year to Ph.D. and advanced Ph.D. candidates from all over the world. These classes cover economic history, econometrics and game theory, and a special session of the evolution of social institutions.

The second component is made of two graduate seminars that are taught every year and bring together the Ph.D. students of the CNISS program with the visitors invited to attend the training program. 15 applicants will be selected to participate each year.

In the final stage of the program, those participants who can stay longer will work with Washington University Ph.D. students and faculty to complete their personal project and prepare them to return to their jobs at universities and other private and public organizations.

CNISS Programs
The Center promotes an ongoing research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, together with junior and senior faculty of Washington University, and scholars from around the world. This program will evolve around four main components: an undergraduate 'minor' program in New Institutional Social Sciences; a certificate program for Ph.D. students; a summer school; and a research center that will help focus and fund research of undergraduate honors theses, graduate dissertations, visting scholars, Washington University faculty, and related research around the world.

CNISS Research
The Center is a collaborative research facility, aiming to coordinate joint projects, resource pools, exchange programs and other forms of cooperation among researchers. Through student exchanges, joint research, and joint academic conferences, CNISS hopes to combine the efforts of centers that are normally in fierce competition with one another.
